How to Announce a Design Award or Exhibition

Winning a design award or joining an exhibition is excellent news, but the announcement needs more than a trophy photograph and the word “delighted”. The strongest stories explain what was recognised, why it matters and what the audience can see next.

Confirm the facts before announcing

Check the official award name, category, project title, organiser, jury information, announcement date and any embargo. For an exhibition, confirm the venue, address, opening dates, public hours, curator and ticket information. Use the organiser’s exact wording where accuracy matters.

Lead with the achievement

The headline and first paragraph should say who received what recognition for which project. Do not make readers work through a long company introduction before reaching the news.

For example, the useful story is not simply that a studio won an award. It is that a particular project was recognised for a specific quality, such as material innovation, accessibility, adaptive reuse or social impact.

Explain the work clearly

Add a concise description of the project and the challenge it addressed. Include the location, completion or launch date, collaborators and the design decisions most relevant to the recognition.

Avoid turning the release into an entry-form statement. Readers need an accessible explanation, not a dense list of ambitions.

Use quotations that add information

A founder’s quote can describe what the recognition means for the studio or what was difficult about the work. If the organiser provides a jury citation, include it accurately and attribute it. The two quotations should not repeat the same praise.

Choose images that prove the story

Lead with the project, object or installation rather than the certificate. Provide high-resolution images, captions, photographer credits and usage terms. For an exhibition, include installation views when available, plus a portrait of the designer or artist and one image suitable for event listings.

Create two media angles

One angle can focus on the award or exhibition itself. The second can connect the news to a broader subject: a new material, an emerging regional scene, changes in hospitality design, local manufacturing or the future of a particular craft.

This gives specialist and local media different reasons to cover the same announcement.

Plan the timing

Respect embargoes and coordinate with the organiser. Announce early enough for exhibition previews and listings, but wait until award results are public. After the opening or ceremony, update the press page with new photography and confirmed details.

Keep the news useful after launch day

Publish the full announcement at a permanent URL and include links to the project page, exhibition information and downloadable media material. A searchable record can lead to later round-ups, interviews and research long after the initial social post disappears.

A good award or exhibition announcement turns recognition into context. It shows not only that the work was selected, but why it deserves a closer look.
